Francis, I simply have to push you back hard on that one. When I said that your children "are not yours", I meant that their minds and beliefs are their own and you do not have the automatic authority to push your own religious beliefs onto your children. I did not say that they "belong to society in general" so if you want to take issue with me, please do not misquote me or put words in my mouth. I did not say that. What I meant was that children should be given the opportunity to explore different aspects of life, science, beliefs, art, etc., and as far as possible to develop their own view of the world. Of course we can (and should) give them guidance in many areas such as basic morals, right and wrong, social behaviour, and so on, but I simply do not believe that just because someone is a muslim (or any other religion) that their children must therefore be told they have to hold the same beliefs. Any more than just because I might be a conservative or a raving monster loony supporter, that my children must therefore be of the same political opinion. That is indefensible arrogance. You say clearly that you believe "it is a parents responsibility to pass on their beliefs to their children". I think you are 100% wrong headed about this. A muslim thinks Christian parents are 100% wrong to pass on their beliefs, and vice versa. Why should your children be forced to be one or other religion just because that's what you happen to believe? it's a total nonsense when you think about it. I am absolutely 100% sure that there is no god and never has been. It's simply too ridiculous for any serious consideration in my view. But I am fully supportive of my childrens' religious education at school, and very happy to discuss with them the beliefs of any and all religions. I have made it very clear to them that if they decide one day to be a Muslim, or a Christian, or a Jedi Warrior Knight, then I will be absolutely fine with that. My beliefs are not their beliefs, they have to make up their own mind by exploring, discussing, and considering. To my mind, anything else is simply bullying just because they are small and cannot argue against us. And you accuse me of "intellectual gymnastics" for extolling the virtues of private education, whilst criticising all forms of religious education. That makes no sense. Children in UK education generally receive a broad based curriculum, whether in state-funded or fee-paying education. I am not sure it makes much difference to be honest, and most studies support this. I fail to see how you can equate the bigotry of religious based education with the general education provided in most UK schools, whether state or private. You just sound like some old Marxist. Children in fee-paying schools do not get a "special education based on their parents income". They get the same education as children in state school, albeit often with better facilities such as sports halls and swimming pools, music rooms, etc. due to the additional money available. But as far as I can tell, the curriculum is pretty much the same. The same cannot be said for religion based education. So what are you talking about? I will be clear. I absolutely believe in a balanced education, where children are exposed to as many aspects of history, science, literature, religion, arts, business, travel, and so on, as possible. They should be able to discuss and learn about all aspects of these subjects and discuss them at home and at school. Any system that forces children down one narrow route of personal belief is, in my view, totally unacceptable and tantamount to child abuse because it stunts the child's ability to think critically about anything. It is plain wrong. |
