Paul,

I think you've misread the map. The District is less crowded along than the Piccadilly along its entire length from Acton Town to South Kensington, including from Gunnersbury to Turnham Green, except for the one equally crowded single stretch from Ravenscourt Park to Hammersmith. The Wimbledon branch has been supplied with trains well before our peak service, so I don't see how that can distort the picture.

And I see a rather different picture to you at Hammersmith at the very peak of service, at around 8.30. Often passengers for the Piccadilly are left on the platform as the trains are crammed. I have never seen that happen on the District.

Of course commuters are affected by their longest journey times. In fact, one of the criticisms of TfL is that the they are pursuing reliability of service over frequency, but you point out a good reason for minimising delays. However, commuters also are very interested in averages, so an analysis based on that is hardly flawed!

It's possible to look at both averages and the range, for the service from Turnham Green. I just looked at my Oyster history for all my journeys from Turnham Green to Earl's Court since the beginning of August. It gives an average journey of 15 minutes, with a range from 12 to 18 minutes. Given that it's a 10 to 11 minute train trip, with another minute or so each end until you touch in or out, I've only been waiting a couple of minutes on average, and not once more than five minutes. That's a pretty reliable commuter service and is consistent with my experience for the last year or so. I would say it's now very rare to wait at Turnham Green for a train into town for more than ten minutes (I've never had to), unless there is a major disruption. I doubt there's a 10 to 15 minute saving to be regularly had from getting the stop for the majority of commuters who are also travelling in the same direction.

The slack Richard has identified is outside the central segment and a faster turnaround has absolutely no effect if the trains are already available - they already turn around a fair proportion at Arnos Grove. Taking out stops will improve the peak frequency and capacity on that central section, not putting in another one.
