Cllr Ellar says "It was never foreseen that there would be a street by street consultation in relation to changing the lighting units."

However residents should know that Cllr Ellar has on two occasions told the Chiswick Area Forum that Conservation Areas will be treated with sensitivity and that ONLY lamp stands of an appropriate design will be installed.

Unfortunately no one present at these meetings (including me) was savvy enough to follow up with "That's wonderful Councillor Ellar we are all greatly reassured by your statement BUT how exactly will you make this happen - will you for example be consulting residents?"

Frankly it looks like we have all been "sold a pup".

How exactly does installing the bog standard new lights in Park Road square with his commitment to treat Conservation Areas with sensitivity. Councillor Ellar (senior) has made us a promise that he now says that he cannot keep.

Infact Councillor Ellar's promise of "sensitivity" extended way beyond Conservation Areas.

Responding to a petition from Chiswick Residents at the last Borough Council Meeting he actually said (if memory serves me right) that the same sensitivity and care would be extended to the "Heritage Fringe". This is a concept invented by Councillor Ellar and relates to streets immediately adjacent to a Conservation Area.

Councillor Ellar assured us that there were sufficient funds available to deliver this pledge - and we all metaphorically (rather than literally!!!) cheered him to the rafters.

What Hounslow Highways and Councillor Ellar need to do (very quickly) is to advise local residents what alternative lamp stand options are available for conservation areas under the PFI contract and provide a workable mechanism for local residents to decide for themselves which they would prefer.

One size fits all - is becoming a familiar refrain from the ruling Labour Group and it is just not aceptable.

PS Anyone interested in other fine examples of "Lights up Trees" should visit Station Gardens.
