“You mean like how Ireland have prospered because of their closer ties with Europe leading to a backing of the European Union's Lisbon reform treaty that gives them better global influence?” The Irish prospered mostly thanks to their own tax incentives – in the face of disapproval from Brussels. Then there was the lovely EU cash from the likes of Germany, Netherlands and the UK. Both of these are likely to change after Lisbon, hence the Irish lobbying pre-Lisbon. Lisbon also gives Ireland less ‘European’ influence, let alone global influence. Part of the reason it’s described as the ‘reform treaty’ is because it ‘reforms’ the things that went before – to the detriment of national parliaments and the benefit of the EU. You haven’t even read the Treaty of Lisbon. You haven’t seemed to have factored the eurozone’s impact on Irish fiscal policy either. |
