In yesterday's paper I read that the illegal home help was married to a local (presumably Chiswick) solicitor, who had UK nationality. Since when has the spouse of a UK national not been entitled to work in the UK ? When I married my wife (a Commonwealth national) twenty-odd years ago I don't recall having to jump through legal hoops to allow her to work legally, even before she obtained British citizenship. Is it a part of this government's new laws that requires such a spouse to obtain permission to work, or has it been a requirement for some time ? One would have thought that the solicitor husband - who has now apparently suffered having the police smash down his front door - could have solved the problem relatively easily by regularising his wife's status before any of this storm blew up. Or are there other complications in this case that the press have not mentioned ? |
