Protesting isn't exactly commonplace around here as you're probably aware. I'd never thought of going on any kind of protest until I found out what the proposals actually mean. Until you've lived under the flightpath you don't know what it would mean to have planes flying overhead every 90 seconds during the day. 4 million may be represented but that doesn't mean they know what the consequences are. The protests (and buying land) all help to publicise the cause. As for NIMBYs - absolutely, and proud to be that way. I'll fight for my quality of life - you can keep your noise and pollution. Just what is legitimate about a government trying to push this through without putting it before the Commons? The opposition parties are against it and to date 45 Labour MPs have signed up demanding a vote. That's a comfortable enough number to defeat the proposals. But no, the "legitimate progress" for west London is championed by the MPs for Kirkcaldy & Cowdenbeath, Ashfield, Edinburgh South West and Bolton West, not to mention the Baron of Hartlepool and Foy. That's Britain's democracy today. Some people are in favour - I'll grant that. Many more are against. Many still don't know. All will be affected. |
