| The program was about the effect of noise on people's blood pressure, not just aircraft noise. It was broadcast because of a recent study by the European Heart Journal. "Sleepers 'at risk' from jet noise" You say, "The A4 has caused far more noise and disruption to this community than Heathrow ever could." Even if that is true today, it certainly won't be if the Goverment gets its way. As you move further away from the A4, the noise decreases significantly. Walls and buildings have an effect. That's not to say it isn't hell for those who live close by - of course it is. Where I live the effect of aircraft noise is greater than road noise. There is nothing to stop the sound of a 747 crashing down on our houses and gardens, but it's not that easy to build a wall above the house or secondary glaze the garden. The major road nearby is generally quiet around 5am, unlike the flights coming in to Heathrow which wake us up. Today, the real nub is this: the A4 is there to stay, as is Heathrow. But the Government is not proposing to roughly double the capacity of the A4, by sneaking it through with a "consultation" that doesn't even consult some of the people most affected, i.e. you and I. I'm sure there is a strong case to be made for the reduction in overall noise levels, but the current opportunity is to Say No to the expansion of Heathrow, and stop them building another A4 above our heads. |
