I doubt if you'll believe this message. It's very unlikely to have appeared in published books etc... Let us know if you if you have heard of it before. I asked "Mr A" recently to recount the story he had told me 2 years previously..as I wanted to digest it fully. Mr A said that a caretaker of a church building in the Hyde Park Corner area had said to him "Come and have a look at this" Mr A followed the caretaker through a door and down some steps....then another door was unlocked and they carried on descending "lots and lots of steps". Finally another door was opened..and outside was huge tunnel in which was a stream that they we able to step over..but amazingly on view was a dual carriageway road that looked as though it had never been used!!! It was "beneath" Curzon Street..where the Security Services had one of their main offices..just off Berkeley Square. Maybe you know the building I mean. It was suggested that it was a secret WW2 road tunnel leading to Buckingham Palace and beyond. This evening, in responding to this thread, I decided to dig out Nicholas Barton's book "The Lost Rivers of London" from my small library. (ISBN 0-948667-15-x ) which has a map. Here is an extract from the map. It shows the Tyburn Stream passing under Curzon Street!! Map in next message..in case it's too large and distorts text lay-out. |
