Mike, London's secret tunnels are a fascinating subject..and when you find out about them..not always is one surprised! If you do a Forum Search you should stumble across many of our messages and threads from the past! Between Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner and Green Park on the Underground, you will have noticed that Piccadilly Line trains start to ziz-zag their way around bends for some reason or other.;0) In addition, looking at the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner, you may recall that one side of the Arch contained the smallest Police Station in London some years back! One day I came to the conclusion that underneath the Arch must be a key junction in the underground secret tunnels coming up from Whitehall, The Mall, and Constitution Hill and then going on to say Hyde Park Barracks in Knighsbridge..an air vent possibly at the Albert Memorial..and then onwards to Kensington Palace...and possibly more!! There must be a mass of tunnels under the Whitehall area...and do you ever see Office Stationery vans delivering to them?? ;0). Deliveries I assume must be all done underground! As you say there are several books on the subject and a few websites too. No one mentions the Wellington Arch! The Wellington Arch is occupied these days by the London Statues Bureau. One day I called in to meet the manager at the end of his day. He was fascinated by my story. He said "It's funny you should say those things ..because one day I was locking up..and putting things away downstairs..and I heard these voices on the other side of the wall!!" Remember this Arch is on a roundabout! |
