Whatever the cost, we are going to have to pay it. Whether through higher water bills or tax.

Question is, do we now trust the Water Companies to hand the money over to them? Is our politics free of the cronyism and opportunity for corruption that led to; ministers, civil servants and the political appointees in the regulator doing the bidding of the water companies to all get rich, rather than deliver an efficient, effective water service.

It is revealed in "Dirty Business" that the excuse of "the system is Victorian" isn't true. Around 10% of the system is that old. Pre privatisation there was ongoing investment to upgrade the system. It stopped after privatisation.

The engineer whistle blower describes how failing pipes that would have been replaced, were instead fitted with a collar over the broken bit. He says, "not going to work, it will fail again". He says they were told they couldn't order a biro without permission from Head Office.

Contributing to this perfect storm is the nobbling of Trade Unions. Back in the day they would have been kicking up about the failure to maintain the system.

Power has concentrated in a few, never a good thing.
