| Get your facts straight, Richard. Stonehouse was never in Wilson's cabinet. His cabinets weren't a bunch of feuding incompetents. Subsequent Prime Ministers would have died for some of his heavyweight intellects and the divergence of views around the table. Not many cabinets could boast the likes of Dick Crossman, Anthony Crosland, Roy Jenkins and Dennis Healey. Two observations on Tony Benn, as he was subsequently known: first, he was regarded by civil servants as an exceptionally able Minister; and second, he was not responsible for the destruction of the British car industry. BMC was on its uppers when Leyland took it over, and in turn BMLC was bust when the government bailed it out. The situation became worse in 1975, as BLMC lost over 10% of its production owing to industrial action. Cue Margaret Thatcher! "I could go on". Don't - you're talking out of your fundament! |
