Relax. It ain't happening. I did get an answer about my question on the Conservative leader having a veto on Johnson being selected for another seat. The local Tories on here seem to have gone into hibernation but I was told off forum was that he does. The problem for Sunak is that apparently Johnson has already told him that, if he doesn't get a new seat, he will contest one of the by elections anyway. There is apparently a lot of informed speculation in the Conservative Party that Nadine Dorries slowness in resigning will mean that the other two by elections due will happen first. Johnson will hope that the performance of the Conservatives will be so bad that Sunak will feel he has no choice but to let him run as the party's candidate in Mid-Bedfordshire. If not he will run as an independent or will be given the leadership of a fringe party which will stand on the basis of Brexit purism. As the seat is likely to be a four way contest, he might calculate that he can sneak in and would be back in the House able to wreak havoc on the government. Hopefully Sunak holds his nerve and tells him to take a running jump. |
