It seems rather dated and quaint now to believe there was opposition to the removal of lead from petrol despite decades (even millenia!) of data showing it was harmful to human health, lowered IQs and that the poorest in society were most exposed to it. Air pollution from traffic will soon follow lead as the public health concern that was far more dangerous than we realised, even though we've known for decades about its impact on human health, that it lowers IQs and that the poorest in society are most exposed to it. When we look back in a few decades people will be incredulous that there really was opposition to cleaning up London's air from people like Peter and Richard. There's a Peter and Richard in every decade demanding that progress must be halted, that their rights to continue doing what they've always done must be respected, that the public health concerns are overstated or a plot to remove their privileges and/or to scam them out of their money. |
