I too have checked the Ordnance Survey map, in this case the Alan Godfrey reprint of the OS map of 1869. This was surveyed in 1865-6 with the railway through Turnham Green (opened in 1869) being added before publication. It shows "Acton Green" north of the railway and "Back Common" south of it. It seems likely that those names predated the railway, with the boundary between them being possibly the ill-defined Acton/Chiswick parish boundary. On the 1912 OS map, it shows Acton Green west of Fisher's Lane, but Back Common on both sides of the railway east of Fisher's Lane, that area being by then mostly within the Chiswick Urban District boundary. |
