Using road access to create a border isn't necessarily a new thing in this area. I have been told that the reason you can't cut through from west to east along the length of St Albans Avenue is a deliberate design originally to stop laundry carts travelling through the area. There was a huge laundry industry to the west of Acton Lane up to the beginning of the last century and the carts would have taken a short cut through the area to get to their clients who were often hotels in the west end. As a result this area inherited and in built protection against rat running. However, it does mean that once the access restrictions are in place in a south creating a border with Chiswick's main commercial area, cars starting their journey east of St Albans Avenue will have to use South Parade even if it becomes more congested. It won't take many abortive trips to convince people they are better off turning north. |
