I agree with Adrian that those members of the community most affected by an issue should be given some special consideration in decision making. Its what I think we would all expect, and the sniping by some residents at others isn't the best way of trying to be neighbourly in discussing a potential compromise solution.

Those close to the Turnham Green did more than moan in cyberspace when they took action against the problems they were experiencing. They won an Ombudsman ruling by their hard work in marshalling a case that was obviously convincing. (I have absolutely no connection with these groups, but remember the debates at the time and how the Council was depicted as not caring about Chiswick before the agreement was reached - now the Council has been accused of the heinous crime of 'pandering' to voters who had to fight hard for their pander).

In my opinion, a farmer's market might be nice but is far from being a vital necessity (there are plenty of other relatively nearby farmer's markets and Chiswick isn't exactly short of places selling French produce)- and it is not something worth causing significant discomfort to some residents closest to where it is held.

I also strongly support Adrian's view that public spaces should generally be used largely for public activities. So, if more events are allowed on the green, voluntary groups should also be allowed to bid for them and it shouldn't be given automatically to a private business (although not precluding a French market if a good case can be made for its particularl merits and lack of negative impact on local residents).

Surely, as Adrian says, it is time for those who strongly support a French market to organise themselves as the resident associations around the Green did, and then seek to have a constructive discussion with those groups - while doing other real world and cyberspace lobbying to support their cause.

But obviously if there is a fundamental conflict of interest, not everyone will get their way, so the 'I'm also a voter so why is my demand not met' argument can't apply to everyone.
