| With great respect to those demanding that I reply to their e-mail postings promptly, I do not look at this website every moment of the day and, being both a lawyer and a local councillor I do have quite a busy life. In my defence, I would just say that I am one of the few local councillors who attempts to regularly contribute to this site. You all know my opinions because I openly express them. I do not think that I have a great deal more to add to what I have already said on the subject of the French Market. I am sorry if some people think that it is strange that I should want to represent the concerns of the people who elected me, but I regard that as part of my job. Unlike councillors from some other parties, I do not think it moral to abandon people between election times. I am not against French Farmers Markets on principle. I have already said that they can be great fun. However, they are mostly commercial and not voluntary/community activities and are, therefore, concerned mainly with profit maximisation. Nothing wrong with that, but I would hate to see the large clouds of smoke created by the crepe stall at the frequent Farmers Market outside Hammersmith Town Hall in King Street be replicated on Turnham Green. In the summertime, with the windows of the surrounding properties open, this would almost certainly cause irritation. I try to represent the concerns and opinions of all of my constituents, not just a select group. However, it would be, surely, wrong to discount the opinions of those directly effected, whilst taking note only of other not living in the immediate vicinity of the Green. If people want to lobby for a Farmers Market it would be best if they contacted the representatives of the residents groups directly. Mr. David Beattie is the main spokesman for Arlington Park Mansions and Mr. Ian Sanderson is the person to contact at Heathfield Court. Alternatively, why don't the movers and shakers behind this idea deliver a consultative leaflet to all the properties surrounding the Green? |
