| Stephen Just because a majority of people who posted on this forum are in favour of a French Market does not mean that a majority of Chiswick or Turnham Green residents are. Twenty or even fifty supporters on this website does not mean that the idea had "overwhelming support". One should not mistake the views of an articulate minority for the views of the majority. Being somewhat of a Francophile, I personally enjoy French markets very much but I think they are best experienced in France. I am concerned about the damage a regular event such as this could cause to Turnham Green (particularly in winter when the ground is soft)and its effect on local jobs and businesses, many of which already sell French food, wine and other products.Local businesses employ local people and pay rates and taxes in England and not in France. We must also be concerned about the effect a French market would have on the existing Farmers Market in Dukes Meadow which raises funds for a good cause. Perhaps we should wait for the outcome of the current discussions regarding the UK's EU rebate and reform of the EU Common Agricultural Policy. French farmers are major beneficaries of the EU CAP which allows French farmers to sell their subsidised products in France and elsewhere and which at the same time prevents Africans and other Third World producers selling their products in the EU. As an alternative I would like to suggest a Fair Trade Market promoting the sale of Fair Trade goods from Third World countries who currently have great difficulty exporting and receiving fair prices for their products and whose own domestic markets are adversely affected by subsidised food from the EU and North America. |
