| Predictably, David Giles supports his fellow conservative, Cllr Lee with some remarkably far-fetched objections to this proposal. >One should not mistake the views of an articulate minority for the views of the majority. The same could be said for Cllr Lee bowing to the opinions of the residents of Arlington Mansions. > Being somewhat of a Francophile, I personally enjoy French markets very much but I think they are best experienced in France. Being Irish, I personally enjoy Guinness very much and think it is best experienced in Ireland. But that doesn't stop pubs in Chiswick serving it, thank god. >I am concerned about ... its effect on local jobs and businesses, many of which already sell French food, wine and other products. Can you list the local businesses which sell substantial quantities of French produce that may be affected? OK, Nicolas wines on CHR but they have almost 500 branches all over Europe. I can’t see Caffe Nero, Starbucks and Sainsburys beside Turnham Green being that worried. More punters in the area should mean more business for everyone, not less. > We must also be concerned about the effect a French market would have on the existing Farmers Market in Dukes Meadow which raises funds for a good cause. A red herring. Dukes meadows is well over a mile away. Why should a French market impact the Farmers market any differently from any other food outlet within a mile radius? > Perhaps we should wait for the outcome of the current discussions regarding the UK's EU rebate... Why stop at the French market? Should we also boycott the aforementioned Nicolas and not buy that piece of Roquefort in the deli on Turnham Green Terrace? > As an alternative I would like to suggest a Fair Trade Market promoting the sale of Fair Trade goods A good idea, but why does it have to be an alternative? Why don't you organise a Fair Trade market on Turnham Green? I think you would have at least the same support to Polly's proposal (but presumeably not from Cllr Lee) |
