The problem with alot of these assertions is that the relationship between cycling and pollution is a complex one. You can't simply assume that every bike ride is a car journey not taken and taking away road space from motor vehicles is highly likely to raise pollution not reduce it. The strongest case for cycling is the one based on personal fitness benefits and the emphasis should be on broadening participation not reducing commute times. |
