Re. Claire Moran:
"New lungs, hearts and brains for all including children whose development it is already affecting and instant cancer treatment for everyone in a 100 mile radius?  And how exactly will you mitigate the effects on work and relationships and general health of broken night after broken night?  And the serious effect it has on the schooling of children in the area? And the effect on climate change?  Stick a few trees into some remote country to compensate?"

The logical consequence of your case would be to close Heathrow completely (and ban cars from the UK while we're at it?), since it already carries with it an unavoidable level of pollution and disruption etc.

However, what I was talking about was the ADDITIONAL pollution and disruption which Runway 3 could cause.

Now consider that it will be operating for 25, even 50 years in the future, during which time technology is likely to become immeasurably cleaner - eg quieter aircraft, electric cars etc.

Add to that the potential for vastly improved public transport to/from LHR (if the nimbys ever allow it to be built), and it is obvious that if the will is there, the additional effects of R3 can be greatly mitigated, if not even eliminated.

Next factor in the "lost opportunity" cost. If LHR doesn't get R3, then it will lose its place in the "Premier League" of world hub airports.

Which in the short-to-medium term will lead directly to the loss of thousands of jobs in and around London. Meanwhile, in the longer term, as national economies becomes increasingly globalised, large, modern, high-value multi-national corporations will simply cease to invest in London/UK if it lacks a world class airport as part of its infrastructure.

This in turn will lead to London becoming less of a truly world class city like NYC, Singapore or Shanghai etc, and more just another eg Munich or Madrid.

Which has the potential to cause even greater jobs and investment losses. And how do you calculate all the illness, early death, stress, depression and marriage break-up etc which follows the inevitable consequential economic deprivation?

And to take all this back to the more local, people eg in Sipson are obviously worried about losing their homes to R3, and no-one could blame them. But what happens if/when LHR declines, they lose their jobs and are forced to move elsewhere to find work? Only they can't sell those homes, because there are no jobs in the area.

Quite simply, the South East losing LHR would be like eg the North of England losing the mines and the shipyards. And nearly half a century later, many of those areas haven't recovered their previous economic stability. Which in turn means that their physical and mental health is significantly and measurably worse than that of people in more affluent regions.

Fortunately nearly 100 Labour MP's, many from the North, voted in favour of R3 - they, at least, understand the crucial importance of Heathrow to our and their lives.

We really need to see "The Big Picture" in all this.
