I remember all those planes you mentioned Julian. And the 1-11 was a particularly smokey monster.I was waiting for a flight back to Britain and the aircraft we were due to fly on was taken out of service due to operational problems.after waiting 5 hours for an aircraft to take us home,a BAC 1-11 arrived. The engines were left running as we boarded. This was done via a stairway that was lowered from the tail of the plane.A queue quickly formed due to the single point of entry. And the fumes from the engines made everyone on the plane cough for the entire journey home.My cough lasted for another 2 days after landing.I don't know how the other passengers got on.In your list of old aircraft Julian, you forgot to mention the Comet 4.I flew back from the Canary isles on one of these and it was the most frightening flight i've ever taken.Oil from the engines was running across the wings for the entire flight. But it was comforting to see the emergency exit had a coiled rope on the door to use to slide down if we needed to evacuate the aircraft following an emergency landing
