With Turkish Airlines being the 6th biggest in Europe (and the fastest growing), Istanbul will have what they claim will be the biggest airport in the world. And why is that? Simply because the Turks see the increasing demand for international hub airport facilities in Europe, conveniently half way between America and the Far East. At present, Heathrow is best placed, but also at full capacity, so cannot meet this new demand. And standing still is not an option, either, since airlines want/need to consolidate services to co-ordinate their schedules and take advantage of economies of scale etc. Which means if they cannot use Heathrow, they won't use the UK's regional airports as an alternative, instead the whole lot will go to Istanbul, Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris etc Which is why eg last year 15m Britons flew to Amsterdam simply to connect with international, trans-continental flights. Without an expanded Heathrow, that trend will continue, so that we will be left with an airport which is really only catering for domestic, UK custom. |
