I agree with many of the recent posts here about the Conservatives and would be voting for them tomorrow if they were more Eurofriendly and led by a Ken Clarke or a Chris Patten. After tomorrow's results, they will surely have to realise that they cannot go on as before. Tony Blair made Labour viable again by saying some very hard things to his own people, while in opposition. The Conservatives need a similar figure, who can re-engage with Middle England, but it is difficult to see who it can be. However the Conservatives' task in four years time will be made easier by Tony Blair's eventual departure from No. 10. It is hard to see that Gordon Brown will have anything like the same appeal in the South of England. |
