Like all divorces the outcome will rest on the quality of the negotiating stances adopted by each party. I personally have high hopes that Theresa May and her team does not underestimate the task faced (unlike the many departed Brexiteers did) given some of her ministerial choices and delaying matters until the dust settles in a number of directions. I suspect that the other potential internal EU danger (in addition to those mentioned) that may surface over the next year is other countries in the EU "testing the waters" and pushes for holding referendums as the UK has done, even if they finally come to nothing. While the posting that kicked off this thread is interesting it should not be forgotten the exit vote was not London/SE of England led. The government is unlikely to ignore that in planning their strategy for both the exit negotiations and the next General Election, given it will largely be fought on how they have handled the EU negotiations. Also, requests to only be positive is in danger of becoming the same catharsis that led to crazy claims and badly argued cases and presentation of biased facts by both sides that dogged the Referendum - people need a full score card of what is good and bad to appreciate and evaluate. Will is right to draw attention to what is a major matter for UK higher education institutions and one assumes there will be many more such cases (good and bad) as the details are pored over. |
