There is substantial talk in the City that Brexit will not happen. That may be what is buoying things. We now know for certain that Article 50 will not be invoked until 2017 (govt attorney). With French elections in March 2017 it would make explicable sense to wait until then (and Hollande is practically certain to go). If May does so, then Merkel is up for re-election in October 2017 (and it looks possible she also may not make it), so again it's appealing to delay Article 50 until after both French and German presidentials. (If Cameron had been less arrogant he would have set the first referendum for late 2017 and the EU leadership and direction had been clearer) At the same time, some of the other nation states are dissatisfied with Juncker (the Sepp Blatter of the EU) and there is pressure to clip his wings. If all that comes to pass, the European scenery may look a lot more attractive and a second referendum would be called. That, at least, is how some in the City (and Westminster) are calling it. In the meantime, hang on and take profits as British crown jewels are sold off. |
