Trying to return the thread to the original theme of the posting, the simple question arises for me as to why an elderly person was allowed to draw so much cash from a bank/building society and carry it away when probably clear to any observer that they could be open to attack if spotted? There was a similar incident some years ago now where an elderly couple withdrew their life savings of several thousand pounds from a major clearer with the intention that would carry along to the new institution they wanted to deposit the funds in. The inevitable happened and they were robbed shortly after leaving the bank when in fact an alert staff member could have explained how to do the transfer safely if they had thought to ask and do so. In the subsequent media uproar I recall a proposal being made to require banks to be more alert to major cash withdrawals by elderly people and asking them the purpose, so a more secure way of handling the money could be discussed. Sadly it seems little has happened in this direction - banks talk about customer service but this sadly seems lacking if the facts were as outlined? |
