No, Gatwick can meet the recommendations of the Davies report and it would be cheaper and faster than Heathrow. If we really need another runway, and I am not sure we do with 7 airports close to London, then that is a no-brainer. They also have far more links to regional airports than Heathrow will be able to provide once the third runway in place - the number of regional airports an expanded Heathrow will be able to serve will reduce in order to be economically viable. If it goes to a vote in the Commons it will be very interesting as the SNP said they would decide which way they would vote on this depending whether Heathrow or Gatwick provided the best links to Scottish Airport. And the SNP vote could make a difference about the government's preferred option getting through. It is now a moot point whether English Votes for English Laws, which has now been passed, will allow the Scots to vote on the UK's aviation future. My belief is that Dave will do all he can to ensure this bill is not voted on. |
