Well, briefly. Because another runway means more noise and more pollution. They are claiming that they will be able to reduce these effects - so why not reduce them now, with the current level of flights? Air quality in west London is below permissable EU standards NOW. At the time of the enquiry into Terminal 5, BAA said there would be no future need for a 3rd runway. David Cameron said "No ifs, no buts, no third runway".
