Alison, the suggestion that 'any more forward will spark a negative reaction' is one of those classic staw man arguments that doesnt really hold up to scrutiny. There is a big difference between proposing something more modest for the site as opposed the tallest tower in the area for miles around. Why for eg does it have to be 32 storeys and not 5 or 10 (the answer obviously being money for developers). The objections are not about the developments per se, but their scale, and the clear prioritising of profit over any concern for the built environment (both teh wider public amenity and indeed the people who might live in them) Also re the pictures, one thing is perspective and distance. Canary Wharf is a good 2 miles or more from Greenwich. This tower would be within a few hundred metres of the river (and indeed Gunnersbury Park) and so its impact on the skyline far more significant. Canary Wharf is also a clear grouping of tall buildings (a bit like La Defense in Paris, whcih is similarly striking but also removed from the city). The difference bein that in Paris high rise has largely been restricted to this area, whereas London is now in a free for all to litter the landscape with random towers, with a race for the tallest |
