It is a most peculiar situation. Corbyn has little support from within the parliamentary party but the overwhelming support of the membership. And yet each and every member of the parliamentary party owes his or her job to the members, who were responsible for their selection. The reason for this extraordinary paradox is that the divisions which have become so defined during the course of the leadership contest were much more blurred hitherto. Locally, for instance, some of Corbyn's most vocal supporters were loudly crowing when Ruth was selected as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Brentford and Isleworth. The contest focused a lot of people's minds, including a great many outside of the party. The Labour Party has at long last reaffirmed its commitment to its traditional values and has a right to expect that that spirit will be embraced by its representatives at local level. I hope that those who cannot accept that will be prepared to fall on their swords or be rejected by their respective local memberships. As for Ruth, my suspicion is that she will be a fully-fledged and dyed-in-the-wool Corbynista by nightfall. |
