The only surprising, perhaps even shocking, thing about Jeremy Corbyn's victory is how high his support was amongst registered members of the party. This means that the parliamentary Labour party is completely unrepresentative of its membership and the next four years are likely to see the beginning of the process of changing that situation. Most Labour MPs came out publicly against Corbyn so the fact that Ruth Cadbury supported one of his opponents isn't in itself enough to put a target on her back. However, Corbyn needs to get control of the parliamentary Labour party in the longer term and if you generously assume that a quarter of MPs would be prepared to back his manifesto at this stage he probably needs to turn or deselect about 100 to go into the next election with a programme which has the support of prospective MPs. Interesting times ahead. |
