Alison, it may "really annoy" you to be stuck behind two cyclists riding side by side but the highway code makes it very clear this is permissable. There's a requirement to always pass giving one vehicles width so unless you're complaining about having to overtake when it's unsafe to do so (which you shouldn't be doing anyway) then it makes no difference whether it's one cyclist or two. Furthermore, speed limits are the maximum permitted speed - if other road users are travelling at a slower speed then that's the speed you should expect to drive at until you reach a safe passing point with at least one vehicles width available. The 20mph limit was introduced in Richmond Park to protect the deer from being hit and killed by speeding motorists. No deer have ever been killed by cyclists - but as a regular cyclist in Richmond Park it's very noticeable the number of drivers who are texting / reading facebook etc whilst driving... they are always easy to spot as the phone is typically in their lap and they are driving looking down at their feet. |
