Cycle lanes are not cycle lanes. I do not trust them because cars will simply pull in front of me and park in them. Or sit there and suddenly open their door as I am cycling past. So I take every second on the road as it comes, and ride in such a way as to ensure I am safe. If that means moving out towards the centre of the road, or approaching traffic lights on the right hand side, in the centre of the road, the that's what I will do. For example, cycling from Turnham Green church along towards Turnham Green Terrace, any cyclist who tries to ride on the left, between the traffic and the pavement, is insane. I cycle in the middle of the road where I cannot be squashed between parked cars on the left and moving traffic which might suddenly veer left. Or cars suddenly pulling out of left turns. And so on. I never cycle on pavements and I never go through red lights. ON the other hand I never try to pull up on the left hand side of large vehicles that might be turning left at junctions - in my view, this is why 90% of the cyclist fatalities happen and it's about time someone made this clear. I will NEVER be squashed by some large vehicle turning left, because I will NEVER be in that space. Why any cyclist ever puts themselves in that space is quite beyond me, it's like standing on a railway line. Oh, and I am both a cyclist and a driver. |
