I had lunch in Bill's today, and asked the manager about the service charge ("optional gratuity" according to the menu). She said that it went into a pool and was distributed to all staff at the Chiswick branch. (I dare say that the management take a percentage for admin, and deduct tax as they are legally obliged to do.) She was not aware of this thread, and thought the recent publicity about Côte (using the service charge to help pay the wages) had made people think that the same practice applied to Bill's. It doesn't. The original post on this thread said that the staff didn't get much of the service charge. That sounds like a waiter who wanted it all for himself. Personally I prefer that everyone who worked to give me an enjoyable meal should benefit. |
