"So if your food is undercooked or overcooked or generally substandard will you still tip if the waiter/waitress is good?" If the food is no good I will let the waiter know, and ask for it to be redone. If that is handled pleasantly and the food comes back perfectly OK second time around, then yes. I would always consider tipping in that circumstance. The waiter / waitress doesn't cook the food but they are the ones who either make or break the customer's experience. If they don't handle it well, or start huffing and puffing, or the problem isn't resolved, then it's probably a little chat with the manager, and almost certainly no tips. My point is (I thought I'd made it quite clearly), is that I am NOT paying the wages of all the staff in the place. I am tipping the table waitress / waiter depending on how good they were. If the restaurant wants me to contribute to everyone's wages, they need to write this clearly on the bottom of the bill so I know what I am paying for. I am extremely unhappy that they seem to be lying to us about this, and telling their staff to lie as well. |
