I just heard some discouraging news. I was speaking with a person who used to work for Bill's Restaurant and I asked why they had left. I was told that although 12.5% is automatically added onto every bill, the staff doesn't get much of it. They said that Bill's tells their staff that instead of paying the basic £6.20 (ish) per hour, they pay them £7.50 (ish) and hour. (Sorry I don't remember the exact number but these are within 10p) That is supposed to be their share of the tips. It does not take a great mathematician to figure out that this amounts to an extra £50 or so a week - or £10 per shift. If a Waiter had kept the 12.5% he would have had a lot more money. Sure they would have lost a share of it to other staff in the pool but they would have still made a lot more. It looks to me like Bills's (and probably their sister restaurant Byrons) is hogging the tip money. You may recall that Carluccio's used to do this a few years back but once it got into the press they reverted. Let's hope if this news gets spread around that Bills will revert as well |
