The age they select is pretty arbitrary - a very dear friend of mine was diagnosed at Christmas after months of begging her doctor for a bowel cancer test which was refused as she was 'too young'.  By the time they finally agreed, reluctantly, to test her the tumour was huge, and she has undergone radiotherapy and the chemotherapy is still continuing and has been unable to give her daughter the support she needed through her exams which has distressed both of them terribly.
