London is in short supply of housing, be it for those able to pay hundreds of thousands for shoebox-sized apartments ('flat' now seems a word only used in cheaper postcodes) or those that can't and rely on the state for help. So homebuilding is a good thing. As for our infrastructure, these apartment-dwellers, for the most won't have cars, or parking spaces/entitlement (with excellent transport links, it's pretty daft to think you need a car in Chiswick...exceptions clearly apply) so shouldn't mess up our roads. In terms of schooling, I'd think that most of said shoeboxes will be rented out to twenty-somethings who don't have kids. Private blocks don't tend to have much of a draw for families so schools shouldn't see much of a gold rush either. I think far worse a problem is those able to buy a flat in the catchment area of a good school, lie on the application form stating they live there, only to move out when their ankle-biter is successfully enrolled. As for healthcare, again, these incomers are high-earners and with that comes BUPA, Axa PPP, etc., etc. I guess time will tell what this does to Chiswick. But more people using our independent shops is a good thing. |
