"the traffic lights need regulating to cope with the huge increase in traffic " I'm not sure that's actually possible, given that it's highly likely that there's enough traffic on every road into the junctions that extending green times on one arm would cause congestion on another. Really, we need to cut the amount of traffic coming in, and paradoxically you can do this by 'gating' - holding traffic longer at junctions away from the area so the rate of traffic is lower, and the congestion isn't entirely concentrated in Kew. Also on the general point of fiddling with traffic lights I'm not sure it's that good an idea to penalise people who've chosen to walk to the benefit of people who've chosen to drive when they've been specifically warned that it's a bad idea. |
