Its to do with colours on chromosomes - to be a tortoiseshell, a cat needs to have an x chromosome with black on it and a separate chromosome with ginger on it. Therefore, if an animal has two Xs it can be tortoiseshell and females are XX. However, males being XY means they can be either black OR ginger but to have both they must be XXY, i.e. have an extra strand of DNA. This can happen in very rare instances, as it can in humans, but that cheeky little extra X chromosome can cause all sorts of health issues, making survival very unlikely. |
