It is certainly an alternative way, Viv, if you can save the money but my seven year old dog used up nearly £8,000 of vet bills and medication within a few months when he got diabetes and then the resulting cataracts and went blind - as he was so young I decided to put him through the cataract operation to restore at least some sight.  It would have been very difficult to find that money if I had not been insured and I don't think it is fair to own an animal and then not give it the best possible treatment if it becomes ill.  I know some owners just shrug and have it put down but I couldn't do that and never want to be in that position.
