"And he wasn't even a local Councillor, representing instead a ward in Isleworth, so the voters affected by his decision have never had a chance to endorse or criticise his actions via the ballot box." I think part of the problem is the 'cabinet' system, prior to this when there were committees you'd have had councillors from various wards who would be able to make their contributions and use their more local knowledge to make their argument. Having been part of both I think that was the far better system, now power is vested in a relative few. A similar situation exists here in Isleworth - again a traffic matter - a real problem that was once solved has been re-created by the brains of the Traffic department, and they've misjudged the situation very badly. It would be too much to expect that someone would put their hands up and admit that, so at the moment we have a fudge, again there will be a single member decision that will not be made by an Isleworth member. In fairness the councillor has been to look at what is going on, but if you don't represent the ward where you will be taking decisions then you have nothing to lose. |
