There are lots of college courses and jobs for which a higher grade at maths GCSE is required many of which would surprise you so it would be worth trying to get this sorted. The best way to get the grade up is by constant repetition of exam type questions. If your friend orders the paper that her child just did you'll be able to see the type of question that was causing the problem. The school should be able to supply similar questions and keep doing them until they become second nature. It's a dull, time consuming process but will be well worth it in the end.
