Although Adam's contribution is welcome his comment about people turning up to meetings to moan does highlight an issue with the system. Council planners are experts and I don't they understandably don't like further involvement in the process from people who have little grasp of how the system works but want to stop an application happening. From a Council's point of view objections waste time and money and many of them are invalid anyway. However, it would be a very dangerous road to go down if it was ever to be the case that the public were excluded from the process. I'm sure planners feel that they could sort out all applications efficiently in accordance with the law without the need for public scrutiny but whilst the majority would be honest the minority would use the opportunity this presents for financial gain. Chiswick doesn't have a newspaper any more so planning notices aren't really widely publicised. Only larger more controversial ones are likely to come to the attention of the wider public through ChiswickW4.com. This is something that needs to be addressed. |
