Being Intersex and Trans are different things and should not be conflated. And no being intersex does NOT mean they can F themselves. Biological sex in science is I believe determined by chromosomes not outward appearance of genitalia. A much higher proportion of people are now thought to have some kind of intersex condition than previously stated, up to 1.7% according to some studies though that is disputed. Interestingly the market in DNA testing has led to more diagnosis of intersex as eg people who thought they were male (they have a penis, are male on their birth certificate and have been raised as a boy) discover they have XX chromosomes which means they are actually female. In the past many of these people led quiet often quite solitary lives knowing something wasnt right but not realising they were intersex. So the simple binary distinction between male and female connected to genitalia that most of us grew up with is an oversimplification. Of course a big majority of people fit into this distinction but not everyone. The answer to the question what is a woman may not be what people think it is eg having a vagina does not always equate with being a woman though the birth certificate may say girl. Perhaps people who are intersex are more likely to transition from the sex they were assigned at birth, I don’t know. Re the ruling I agree that women’s spaces should be protected and that trans women should not compete in womens sport. But overwhelmingly threats and attacks on women come from heterosexual men not trans women. |
