Deciding what traffic measures to be introduced or scrapped shouldn't be decided by a popular vote. It should be determined by qualified engineers implementing the policy of an elected authority and this is pretty much what is happening here whether you like it or not.
The Experimental Traffic Order route made some sense at the time of lockdown but now seems to have been a bit misguided. The Cycleway literally is an experiment but unfortunately we have just learned that it is going to be tested in the most rigorous way with extended closures of the A4 for the rest of the year.
This will make it hugely difficult to determine how the Cycleway is working. There will be massive traffic jams which some will blame on the cycleway and some will insist are nothing to do with it. Even if it is found to be contributing to jams, ripping it up when the A4 works are going on will be impossible because Chiswick High Road will be on a key diversion route. It's going to be messy. |
