| When Governments at all levels start trashing democracy they don’t know when to stop. A good example is TfL. Many across Chiswick will have received a TfL email, Cycleway 9: Goldhawk Road to Chiswick Lane improvements complete. As many have witnessed, both the words improvements and complete can be rightly contested. In that email it says “This autumn, we will launch a six-month public consultation on the changes. We will write to local people when the consultation starts to invite your views, ideas and experiences of the trial scheme.” As the email says Cycleway 9 has been put in using an Experimental Traffic Order. Legally that must allow for its complete reversal and removal. What it does not say is what will happen, just like the last time, what TfL will do when 80% of the Chiswick residents vote against it again, as they have for every scheme in Chiswick. Why not? Is this not an experiment? If it is not, why are they using an Experimental Traffic Order? Is it a ruse to get round proper procedures or is it a bare-faced lie? Will they simply ignore the votes against as they have ignored the ongoing and real concerns that it is unsafe. Like Boris Johnson, what we are seeing is what happens, when self-centred small elitist minorities, such as administrators in TfLs cycling team egged on by their fanatical lobbying groups, believe they have a right to push forward their own self-interest at the expense of all others as “a price worth paying”. They don’t. What Boris found out when the facts went against him, and after an attempt to find new stories or provide new explanations, that once again did not stand up, was that the majority judged him to have lied and repeatedly lied. He had to go. On Cycleway 9, we already know the score: a majority of residents (80%) across Chiswick and surrounds are strongly against it. TfL and Hounslow Council know this. It is, an inconvenient truth, but in not listening to the people of Chiswick, they are repeating the failures of Johnson and trashing democracy. TfL need to be honest and work with the majority of Chiswick who are against Cycleway 9, not insult them by ignoring them once again. |
