| Isn't the point here the lack of coherence of government policy? On the one hand they clearly do believe that it makes tactical sense to let the virus spread more rapidly over the summer months to try and mitigate problems that will inevitably arise next winter. However they are persisting with the track and trace requirement to self isolate if you are 'pinged'. Not a huge problem if you work in the public sector or another job in which you have generous sick pay but something that creates huge problems for those on low incomes or who are self-employed. We've already seen one example recently of a cafe forced to close in Chiswick because of the system and many more businesses will have to over the summer just as they were hoping to get back on their feet. In the UK at the moment we have the worst level of infections in Europe and one of the least generous arrangements for financial support for those who are self-isolating. I don't think there is any reason to doubt there is a link between these two factors. It would have cost businesses nothing and reduced the spread of the disease if the government retained the requirement to wear facemasks while infection levels were so high. |
