| There were people in the 1980s who said that Safer Sex AIDS prevention campaigns were an infringement of their rights - mainly people who hadn't: - sat at the bedside of many men in their 30s wasting away to their deaths had to tell a grieving family that their golden boy was both a gay man and dead had to listen to many stories of men sacked from their jobs 'incase' they had AIDS had to tell a man in his early 20s who had just met the love of his life that he had contracted a terminal illness and, with no effective treatment available, was going to die shortly I had to do all those things and noticed that it's personal experience that counts. When the hospitals are overflowing with Covid19 patients it will be too late but people might then take this seriously. And the final irony, I've was told that all the AIDS prevention work we did was a waste of time and money because that epidemic never really happened. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. I've just turned 60, my parents are 90 and I intend to reach that age and more if I possibly can. A mask is such a small price to pay. By the way - HIV (AIDS) is still with us, we have adapted and there are new treatments all the time and new medications (PreP) that act like vaccines. We will get through this, the only real question is that when we look behind us how many thousands of dead bodies will we see and how many of those deaths might we have all personally prevented? |
